Cabin Baggage Policy for Malaysia Airlines

Each and every cabin baggage of Malaysia Airlines must adhere to the dimensions of 56 X 36 X 23 cm with a total linear dimension of 115 cm or 45 inches, where each bag can only weigh 7 kg. In contrast, the allowance of weight and number of pieces of the bag depends on the fare class that you have selected for your flight with the mentioned airline, which can be seen as: 

  • Economy Class Fare: You are allowed to bring one piece of baggage weighing 7 kg or 15 lbs into your flight cabin.
  • Business Class and Business Suit Class Fare- Fare type with business class and business suit class can bring two pieces of cabin baggage, with a total maximum weight of 14 kg or 31 lbs.  

Note: Apart from the above-mentioned cabin baggage, all the passengers are allowed to bring one of the articles mentioned below for free:

  • Anyone of personal items, such as a laptop bag, handbag, small briefcase, or camera bag.
  • A bag of duty-free shopping that has been purchased at the airport on the day of your scheduled flight.
  • You can also be allowed to carry a pair of crutches, a walking stick, or an overcoat.
  • In addition to the above items, you can have an amenity bag for an infant or a lightweight stroller weighing up to 5 kg without any extra cost if you travel with an infant. 

Checked-in Baggage Policy for Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines allows its passengers to carry a maximum of 158 cm or 62 inches of total liner dimensions as checked-in baggage, where the weight limit varies based on the fare class as well as the fare brand of the passenger, which can be seen as follows:

Weight Concept for Free Checked-in Baggage Allowance in Malaysia Airlines

  • Economy Fare ClassThe allotment of weightage in checked-in baggage for economy fare class passengers varies between 10 and 35 kg based on their fare brand and the destination of the flight. 
  • Business Fare Class- An individual from the Business fare class in Malaysia Airlines are allowed to carry 40 kg of checked-in baggage if its fare brand is Basic, whereas fare brands with Flex or Suit are permitted to have 55 kg weight. 
  • Business Suit Fare Class- All the Business Suit fare class passengers can allocate 55 kg of weight in checked-in baggage regardless of their fare brand and destination. 

Note:

  • There is no concept or limitation on the number of pieces of bags for domestic flights.
  • The concept of the number of bags is only allowed on International flights of Malaysia Airlines, which can vary based on an individual's membership status. 
  • A single item can maximum weight of 32 kg or 70 lbs.
  • 40 kg of free baggage is allowed to all passengers who are travelling on a Government Warrant.

Extra Baggage Policy for Malaysia Airlines

In any case, if your baggage exceeds the free baggage weightage limit, you are entitled to pay the airline the additional cost. The cost will be based on the distance mentioned in your itinerary, i.e., the distance between the point of departure and the end destination. The rate of the excess baggage ranges from 11 USD to 30 USD per kg based on the region's applicable rate decided by the airlines. 

Note: 

  • If a passenger with a government warrant is travelling on a domestic service flight from Malaysia Airlines, then s/he is charged 5 USD per kg. 
  • You are not allowed to carry extra baggage if you are flying in a code share or interline flight.  
  • The purchase of extra baggage is non-refundable and non-transferable. 
  • The airline may deny some of the excess baggage purchased for security or safety reasons. If this happens, the airline will provide you with a full refund of the excess baggage purchased.  
  • The rates and terms and conditions of the excess baggage products can be changed by Malaysia Airlines anytime, with or without any notice.
